OACCUs – The Ambassador Training Journey

The OACCUs project, funded by the European Commission EU4Health program, stands as a beacon of hope for young cancer survivors across six European countries. Through a concerted effort involving 13 organizations, the project aims to enhance the quality of life and overall health of these survivors, aligning with Europe’s beating cancer plan. Central to this mission is the development of OACCUs Ambassadors, individuals dedicated to providing support and guidance to young cancer survivors.

From January to March 2024, over 500 OACCUs Ambassadors underwent intensive training in Italy, Germany, Sweden, Portugal, Greece, and Spain. These training sessions, tailored to fit national contexts, emphasized four pillars: Physical Activity and Outdoor Sports, Balanced Nutrition, Sustainability and Nature, and Physical and Mental Well-being. While the formats varied, the core message remained consistent, reflecting the project’s unified vision.

The culmination of these efforts resulted in the OACCUs Training Manual, a comprehensive resource featured in the OACCUs Network Toolbox. This manual synthesizes the core message into actionable steps, serving as a guide for ambassadors in their support roles.

The report on training activities delves into the meticulous process of developing training materials, iteratively improving content, and analyzing the outcomes of national implementations. It offers insights into participant numbers, training formats, and feedback from all participating countries. Moreover, it provides links to communication and dissemination efforts, ensuring the project’s message reaches a wide audience.

Reflections from organizers and participants offer valuable perspectives on the training experience. Organizers share insights into planning and executing the sessions, while participants offer feedback on the effectiveness of the training. These reflections culminate in recommendations for future initiatives, laying the groundwork for continued support for young cancer survivors.

Beyond serving as a detailed account of training activities, this report serves as inspiration for ongoing efforts to empower young cancer survivors.
