Objectives

• To create a European hub to share realities and challenges organisations face, and exchange good practices in combating discriminatory communication,

• To diagnose different types of language-based discrimination across Europe, especially concerning migrants and refugees in online or offline context,

• To investigate how young people talk about certain groups of people, especially migrants and how media refer to them

• To raise awareness among youngsters on the fundamental role of fair, undiscriminating communication in uniting the society,

• To highlight the fault line between the Freedom of Speech and Expression, and Hate Speech,

• To develop appropriate inclusive communication to be used among youth.

Activities

The project consisted of one training course that took place in Ödemiş (Province of Izmir), from 22nd to 30th of April 2018 and lasted 9 days (travel days included). The training course gathered 25 youth workers/young leaders, 2/3 from each of the 9 partner organizations. This international meeting was conceived as a starting point for a better understanding of discrimination, inclusive language, media and communication strategies. Starting from sharing a European framework of this main topics, all the partner organizations involved and their participants had the chance to present their national contexts and to share best practices on discrimination and anti-discrimination. Practical examples of different aspects related to the personal way of using language, media and social communication allowed all the involved organizations to strengthen their capacity to communicate in a proper way. Different methodologies were used such as knowing each other and team building activities; workshops, simulations, role – plays on discrimination and anti-discrimination topic; human library; sharing of media covering of discrimination issue in the different countries; meeting with a local newspaper, intercultural interaction among the participants and the local community; youthpass and key competences; creation through teams work of guidelines on how to use inclusive and not discriminatory language translated in nine languages.

Results
  • Empowerment of youth organizations and youngsters who have developed the necessary competences to take action and to build a more inclusive society
  • Raised awareness on the fundamental role of undiscriminating communication in uniting the society;
  • Creation of innovative guidelines in nine different languages on how to use a more inclusive language
