Objectives
The project aims to:
- Identify the special needs and characteristics of deaf education and connect them with the STEM fields.
- Develop new methodologies and tools for teachers and Sign Language interpreters to transmit the main STEM concepts into deaf education.
- Harness the Sign Language and the special elements of deaf culture to promote STEM education in primary and secondary level of education.
- Promote the involvement of teachers, Sign Language interpreters and deaf students in real-life STEM projects.
Activities
The project will engage in the following activities:
- Need analysis through focus group and interviews
- Development of a STEM kit and vocabulary in Sign Language
- Design, pilot testing and realization of the platform
- Implementation of the STEM projects
Results
The project has yielded the following results:
- A Transnational study for the existing methods of teaching STEM in deaf education and the needs of teachers and deaf students.
- A new tailor-made methodology for teaching STEM in deaf education in the form of Bilingual handbook– ‘STEM in Deaf Education’.
- An online Platform with a visual STEM lexicon in several EU Sign Languages.
- Real-life STEM projects co-created by deaf students and teachers/ Sign Language interpreters
