PASSION FOR INCLUSION

CEIPES hosted workshops about sexuality and people with intellectual disabilities

On 10th and 11th March 2022, the CEIPES offices hosted assistants and professionals (teachers, psychologists, etc.) who work and live with children with mental disabilities. The intention of these workshops (part of the Passion for Inclusion project – number 2021-1-DE02-KA220-ADU-000035138-), was to understand their needs in order to address sex education with people from this target group, and to create ad hoc materials to support them along the way.

The psychologists Raucea and Volpes, who conducted the meetings, led the participants to a sincere and total openness, a lively, deep and participative debate.

All participants agreed on the right to love of young people with intellectual disabilities, but there was not the same agreement on the right to sex, as if there could be the former without the latter.

During the workshops, some parents expressed the need to work in harmony with educators and teachers, but pointed out that this often does not happen, because professionals provide parents with feedback on progress and difficult behaviour, but not on how to talk to children about love or sex.

In conclusion, a great need emerged: targeted courses on affectivity and sexuality, which do not look at the value system but at the good of the other and materials to facilitate understanding.
