PCTO and Volunteering: Understanding Climate Change to Tackle It

9 April 2025

As part of the celebrations for Palermo Italian Capital of Volunteering 2025, CEIPES ETS, in collaboration with CESVOP (Palermo’s Volunteering Service Center), organized a Pathway for Transversal Skills and Career Guidance (PCTO) with the State Teacher Training Institute “G. A. De Cosmi”. Sixteen students from class 3H took part in a 20-hour program held between February and March, focused on climate change and environmental sustainability.

Program Structure
The pathway consisted of three informational modules, each lasting 3 hours:

  • Climate Change – Truths and Fake News: An interactive workshop designed to distinguish accurate information from misinformation about climate change.
  • Climate Change – The Circular Economy: An in-depth look at circular economy practices as strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change.
  • Climate Change – What Is Our Role?: A reflection on the individual and collective contribution to the fight against climate change.

Following these modules, the students participated in four practical group sessions aimed at designing and carrying out awareness-raising activities. These included the creation of an educational escape room and initiatives linked to MADE – Analog-Digital Museum of Empowerment.

Collaboration and Support
The activities were supported by four Civil Service volunteers involved in the project “Verde Mare: The Waves of Change”, which aims to raise community awareness about the environmental impact of consumption habits through educational and training experiences.

A Learning Experience
For many of the participating students, this pathway was their first exposure to the world of social engagement. CEIPES continues to support these initiatives, firmly believing that education and awareness are essential tools in addressing global challenges and building a sustainable future.
