On Tuesday, October 3, 2017, on the occasion of the National Day in memory of the victims of immigration, the final event of the “Centred by Sport” project was held at the CUS Palermo.

The project, addressed to 150 refugees between the ages of 16 and 30 who currently live in 14 reception centers, arises from the need to create the conditions for access for migrants – of both genres – to sports activities, reducing the economic, geographical or cultural difficulties: in fact, sport is fundamental to preserve and develop the psychophysical health of individuals, especially refugees who report physical shortcomings because of the conditions they live both before and after their arrival in Italy.

Through the promotion of values, such as mutual respect, sharing, teamwork, sport is an important tool for social integration, overcoming socio-economic and cultural barriers.

The project therefore arises from the need to safeguard and develop the physical and mental well-being of refugees who, for different reasons, find it increasingly difficult to practice sport. And through this, promoting their integration into society.

The specific objectives that led the project are:

  • To facilitate the participation of refugees in various physical activities by creating a network of local partnerships.
  • To awake in young migrants desire for the sport, through a Grand Tournament that featured five different sports.
  • Provide refugees with the tools and knowledge they need to make the best use of the potential of the project.
  • Identify, through sports participation, fundamental values such as gender equality, fair play and social inclusion.
  • Develop special guidelines for involving refugees and bring them to the sport as much as possible, taking into account their different needs.

The event on October 3rd  is part of a long journey , 8-month course, divided into three parts: training sessions on values, sport training and tournaments.

The Ceipes facilitation team consisted of different and complementary roles and tasks, heterogeneity that allowed to respond to the training needs of the group: so there were Irene Capozzi and Emanuela Firetto, as trainers; Yacoub Said Islam and Numu Touray, as young youth leaders and cultural mediators, a group of volunteers, responsible for logistical support.

The main objective of the three days was to stimulate a reflection on the values that can be practiced through sports and to “Group”.

Ice breaking, role-playing, team building and brainstorming: Through non-formal education methods and techniques, participatory learning processes were facilitated among young people with different migration backgrounds, highlighting specificities and creating peer dialogue spaces.

Participants, therefore, had the opportunity to initiate a reflection on their own identity, both cultural and intercultural, through the themes of values, which started a path that involved the individual and collective sphere.

The next step, in the training phase, focused on the training sessions, which took place in April: the participants, under the careful guidance of the coaches, got to know the sport of the project – futsal, athletics, badminton, volleyball and cricket-first of all from the theoretical point of view.

For many, it was something totally new and aroused great enthusiasm, which characterized all phases of the project, especially the athletic preparation one.

All ready! The project comes in the waiting phase by the participants: the tournaments!

At this stage, the participants put into practice everything they had learned during the different stages of training: team spirit, sharing, enthusiasm, participation distinguished the Grand Tournament, which ended on 3 October, with the closing day of the project.

On this occasion, it was played the Quadrangular of Futsal, by the winning team -SPRAR -of the futsal tournament, student representatives UNIPA, UNIPA employees and ANPS National Association of State Police, Monreale Section.

It was a moment of sharing and participation, followed by the award of all the participants in the project, which until the end showed a strong sense of belonging to the path undertaken 8 months ago; this positive response, both from the participants and the partners involved, gives us hope that we can continue along this path, starting other projects in the future, and achieve excellent results as those obtained by “Centred by Sport”.
