STAFF MOBILITY – Coding and Robotics to empower CEIPES

From 15 to 18 May 2023, CEIPES participated in training provided by ICT – International Central Training at Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic.

The course was designed for teachers of all subjects who wish to learn and then effectively teach rapidly developing disciplines such as computer science and robotics, which are considered an inseparable part of man’s future life.

The training sessions began with an introduction to coding and the various software used to train students. The participants first practised using the block coding technique. Thus, it was possible to programme the first robots, Ozobot, by means of pre-set codes, different paths were developed for the small robots.

Next, the participants experimented with more advanced techniques, developing loops and commands connected to the robots’ sensors. In addition, thanks to a visit to the Smichov secondary technical school, the participants carried out various activities with MicroBit. The BBC micro:bit is a pocket-sized computer that introduces you to how software and hardware work together. It has an LED light display, buttons, sensors and many input/output features that, when programmed, let it interact with you and your world.

The Makeblock robot is coding software with a free remote-control app, allowing anyone to have fun and learn how to code. It can be assembled through a basic kit and then implemented with various extensions. This allowed us to really experiment with designing and programming codes, taking advantage of all the sensors the robot was equipped with.

In addition, a small competition took place between the participants, with the assignment to use all the strategies provided by the software and the robot’s sensors. This allowed the participants to measure themselves against each other, to understand the level of knowledge they had learnt. The use of this technology is very much in demand at all levels, in the labour market.

Robotics and the use of coding is a subject that is still too little used in schools and vocational training; in fact, those who want to pursue this career often have to resort to private or higher-level training courses. This alienates many groups, especially girls and those who cannot afford paid training.

CEIPES has always taken careers related to technology and innovation very much to heart. This is why it strongly believes that technology should be available to everyone, facilitating learning.

Keep following us to learn more about coding and robotics and the training of them.
