“I have always thought that living abroad is one of the best experiences you can have in life. Not only for traveling and having the possibility to learn another language, but for the personal growth that comes from go out of you comfort zone. Knowing a culture different from yours and steeping in its traditions, its gastronomy and its people, gives you a vision of the world that can not be learned in any other way.

The European Volunteer Service (EVS) is a very good opportunity to live this experience. The EVS is, for those who do not yet know, a program within the European Erasmus + framework that allows young people from all over Europe to carry out an international volunteering service in a continent-wide association whose work may be on sport, education, migration, healthy area and a long etcetera.

EVS not only allows you to live in another country for a considerable period of time (up to one year as maximum), but also encourages you to be part of the community that welcomes you. This helps you to develop a broader scope and be more tolerant towards other cultures and societies, which I consider as a great personal development.

The field of work also has its advantages, since you can perform work with an entity or organization for several months in the field you have chosen, improving your professional skills and learning about the dynamics of work, w ith the incentive to have realized this experience beyond the national borders.

The Erasmus + program does a lot to make this experience as accessible as possible, and between the supranational organization and the host organization, they offer accommodation, transport, language courses and monthly financial aid for the maintenance of volunteering in the city.

Personally, in these little more of three months that I have been in Palermo, I have begun to know a culture so similar and at the same time so different from mine, to establish relationships with people from all over the continent and, above all, to know myself better, my abilities and my limits. An experience I would never forgive not have had”.

Eva:

“It all started at the beginning of February, I woke up in the morning with a message that said, “We need volunteers in Palermo to work with refugees, interested?”, immediately jumped out of bed, since the beginning of this crisis that was looking for ways and programs to help, I immediately said yes without even thinking twice despite the fact that the project started in March and lasted for 9 months.

I had some meetings with my sending organization, AEVA and with the hosting organization, CEIPES and it was there that I began to realize that this EVS wasn’t only related to refugees but with all the action, promotion and appreciation of human rights in different fields.

The start of the project was slightly delayed due to the lack of adherence of participants in Italy. It was supposed to have started in early March but only started in early May, for me it was great, it gave me more time to organize my things and to say goodbye to friends and family.

When I arrived in Palermo I had an incredible help from my roommate and also a volunteer at CEIPES, Zuzanna, on the first weekend she took me to know the main points of the city, how to go to the office, to the beach, where to buy food, she took me to try the typical dishes of Palermo and Sicily. The staff at the office is like a small family, I’ve never felt such a familiar environment in a workplace, they all get along beautifully. Manuela is my Palermitana mother, always worried and super sweet with me and the rest of the staff is like my older brothers, I can count on the support of anyone in that office for whatever I need.

I have always had an enormous passion for Italy, which made it very easy to get used to the Italian culture, the only obstacle I had and I still have is the language, I admit that I haven’t spent much time studying the language. Sicily is a beautiful island and I have taken more advantage of my free time to know her than to study. I have to start changing my routine and take a few hours to study Italian.

The area that I have worked the most is the graphic part, I’m responsible for the promotion posters, the editing of videos and the creation of logos. It’s something I’m really enjoying doing because I want to follow this area in the future. We also gave some Trainings Course and my job was to help with all the logistics and activities. We are now starting to plan a new project and I am looking forward to it, the group involved in the project is of different nationalities which makes each of us have a different point of view in relation to the theme and this has created incredible ideas, you may hear about it later!

So far I am having a unique experience both personally and professionally. The fact that EVS provides a form of non-formal learning, completely non-linear, is ideal for anyone who aspires to learn without an instruction manual; Learning by doing. I have grown a lot with this program, I have learned a lot from the others and taught it too, I still have 5 months left and I am looking forward to new projects.”
