[label style=”1″]Priority addressed: Combating different forms and manifestations of racism and xenophobia (RaX)[/label]

[label style=”2″]Type of activities: Awareness-raising, information and dissemination[/label]

Themes:

  • Stereotypes and prejudices towards migrants and different ethnic communities;
  • Misrepresentation of migrants and minority communities in the media;
  • Citizenship in multicultural societies;
  • Media’s responsibility in influencing the perception of diversity in the public opinion.

Summary:

Conflicts and unstable political situations in regions of the world outside Europe brought to an increase of migration movements toward European countries, already characterized by multicultural societies and the presence of second and third generations of immigrants. The economic crisis spreading in Europe has fuelled racism and xenophobia toward immigrant and minority communities who have become the easy scapegoat of civil society anger and frustration. The misconception that migrants represent a danger for security or an obstacle for employability and welfare for native citizens, need to be addressed starting from the public opinion and the representation that is mainly conveyed by media. These realities are often represented without deepen the backgrounds or giving voice to these communities.

The project aims to fight stereotypes and prejudices towards migrants and minority communities addressing the issue of misrepresentation in the media and its impact on the public perception of immigrants. The ultimate goal is to reduce racism and discrimination of migrant communities as a result of the economic crisis.

To reach our objective we want to organize a training addressed to 20 participants among journalists, editorial staff, teaching staff in the field of journalism and media, aspiring young journalists. The goal of this training is to provide them the opportunity of developing their intercultural competence and have a closer insight into the different migrant communities in their country. The pedagogical approach will be based on non-formal education, living library, study visits to different communities and meetings with their members and representatives. Additionally to the training the project foresees the realization of a European documentary on minority community citizens and migrants, giving them the opportunity to have the voice to express their view and explore their background. This documentary will be the basis for the campaign on fighting stereotypes and prejudices towards migrants and minority communities.
